CAIN'S QUESTION: THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT

Presented by Ron Duncan-Hart, PhD

Thursday July 15 ~ 7 PM

RainbowVision  500 Rodeo Road

Arrive early, space is limited!

Cain's question, "Am I my brother's keeper?", is applied to the Arab-Israeli conflict to suggest the responsibility that everyone has in contributing to the solution of violent conflict in the world. In this talk, Dr. Ron Duncan-Hart brings an anthropologist's perspective to bear upon the issues.  The Arab-Israeli conflict is multi-dimensional with many layers of friction.  History, land, religion and violence are the most obvious, but the largely ignored issues of demographics and wealth distribution are underlying factors that are also driving it.  This talk will focus on the interaction of the many dimensions that contribute to this conflict, but special attention will be given to less discussed stealth issues, including the "youth bulge", illiteracy and inadequate economic performance.

Suggested donation for classes: $5  for members, seniors and students and $10 for non-members.

TALMUD STUDY - NEW!

Saturday Aug 14 - 8:45 AM

Ever wanted to study Talmud but thought it might be too complex or take a long time? Not here at HaMakom! Join Rabbi Jack Shlachter this summer as we read in from the Babylonian Talmud, tractate Bava Metzia 58b-60b. The passage, which may be familiar to many, and includes the famous oven of Akhnai, covers human feelings, business ethics, and the problems resulting from hurting people emotionally or monetarily.

In typical Talmudic style, our discussion will touch on many additional topics including the nature of hell, honoring one's spouse, and the role of converts. We will be conducting the sessions in English. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, but absences are anticipated. There will be no writing in honor of Shabbat.

The classes will be 1 hour; 8:45 - 9:45 AM at HaMakom on the following Saturdays before services:

July 17, 24

August 14
September 4
